At the core of serious mental illness is stressful experiences that cause unstable human attachments and difficulty regulating emotions and behavior. Emotion dysregulation, basic distrust, and impaired interpersonal functioning cuts across many psychiatric diagnoses including psychotic and paranoid conditions, personality disorders, mood disorders, and anxiety disorders such as PTSD. The Monarch Community is an ideal total immersion environment for enhancing emotional intelligence and social cognition in real time. Group, individual, and family therapy allows residents to hone skills while learning to feel more connected to others and to understand themselves better.
While all our therapies are tailored to residents’ specific needs, the overall treatment model is the integration of medications and Mentalization-Based Therapy (MBT), an evidence-based treatment that enhances healthy mentalizing through co-regulation of emotions and strengthened safe/secure attachment bonds. Restoring the ability to mentalize fosters emotion regulation, reduces impulsivity, and promotes functional, supportive relationships.
Our attachment-based treatment helps residents establish a safe, secure bond to help in the regulation of emotions, promote social cognition, and cultivate healthy interpersonal relationships. When residents feel safe in trusting the basic intentions of their team and peers, new learning and growth emerge.
